30 Weekssssssssss!

Wow...I can't believe I only have 7 more weeks until I'm full-term and a total of 10 until our son is born. Looking back this pregnancy has been fairly easy compared to others that I've seen. However now that I'm in the final stretch and have gestational diabetes it's not that easy anymore. I can definitely say I am one of those women who doesn't like to be pregnant. Was it an experience, yes definitely. Seeing Max for the first time, hearing his heartbeat, feeling him kick, finding out the sex, watching my body change so drastically have all been amazing experiences. Yet overall I just don't enjoy it and I really look forward to having my old body back. All in due time of course! I need Max to bake in there for as long as he needs, no matter how uncomfortable I get. His health and safety are the most important thing to me and so 10-12 weeks is well worth it.

Now that we are getting so much closer I can definitely feel the stress starting to creep in. We are still waiting to hear from the Bank to see if our buyer has gotten approved for a loan...the wait has been brutal and the longer the wait the worse the feeling. Then we have to pack up the apartment and move...I won't even go into all of that. But what a pain. Steve is also planning on going to London for two weeks in October for an internship, which is great but timing wise could prove to be a bummer for me. And last but not least, we have NOTHING for baby Max...well besides the lovely bugaboo stroller we purchased on the side of the street haha I'm very good under pressure and I definitely wait until the last minute to get things done so all this shouldn't be a problem for me...now I'm just hoping Max, the bank, and our new home will cooperate...lets hope this is our year!

30 Week Belly Picture

How far along? 30 weeks...WOW, I can't believe i'm in the 30's!
Total weight gain/loss: total 24 pounds
Body Changes? Boobs becoming a bit sensitive again, belly growing.
Sleep: Sleep has officially become very uncomfortable. My belly is too big to sleep the way I used to, and now I have to have a pillow between my legs.
Best moment this week: Finding out I was having another niece...Hannah Liv...she is beautiful and I can't wait to meet her!
Gender: Boy
Food Cravings: Strawberries, peanut butter and jello with whip cream
What I miss: Not having to prick my finger 4 times a day.
Symptoms: The more the pregnancy progresses, the more tired I am. Water retention is slowly starting.
Movement: Max is still moving around at the same time during the day...first thing in the morning when I get to the office, after lunch, and early evenings. It now hurts me sometimes when he punches my ribs.
What I am looking forward to: Seeing the doctor on Friday, haven't seen her since I got diagnosed with gestational diabetes.
Milestones:Getting my numbers under control. The nutrionist today said my numbers were great!

As baby's skin smoothes out, her brain just keeps getting more wrinkled. All those grooves and indentations increase surface area, meaning more room for that oh-so-essential brain tissue. She's also adding some brawn -- her grip is now strong enough to grasp a finger

29.5 weeks and counting....

Yes, the simple act of putting something into my mouth is now not so simple anymore. Steve and I met with my nutritionist two days ago to go over what my numbers should be, how often I have to test (4 times a day) and what I can and cannot eat. We then went out and purchased a glucose monitoring system, which are expensive. You need to buy the little lancets, the testing strips, the machine, and alcohol swabs.
I hate pricking my finger, it hurts a bit, but not too bad. What's worse is the inconvenience of having to do it exactly two hours after every meal and first thing when I wake up. On top of planning my meals down to science it's just a big fat pain in the you know what. My first two days of testing were great, even on the low side, then last night I had the same dinner I had the previous night, and I blew through my numbers. I can't go over 120 two hours after a meal, and last nights dinner was 184. My poor hubby got all worked up, so tonight I'm heading to the gym. Hopefully that will do the trick since the night before I walked for 45 minutes and my numbers were low.
Steve and I have so much going on at the moment, I will let everyone know once I know it's a done deal. All good news...great news actually but I'm afraid to jinx it. I'll be heartbroken if it doesn't work out.

29 Week Belly Picture

How far along? 29 weeks
Total weight gain/loss: total 23 pounds
Body Changes? Just my belly getting bigger
Sleep: Sleeping really well lately with the exception of last night...too many things on my mind. Peeing still a problem though.
Best moment this week: Don't want to jinx it...so I won't say it quite yet...but praying all the stars align and it goes through.
Gender: Boy
Food Cravings: Sweets...now that I can't eat them. I'm having such a sweet tooth right now and can't eat them!
What I miss: not having gestational diabetes...i miss not watching my food so much.
Symptoms: tired, peeing, my energy fluctuates a lot depending on my blood sugar. Looking forward to getting it under control.
What I am looking forward to: Hearing if our buyer got the loan. I'm sooooooo nervous!
Milestones:Been really watching what i eat so i can get the diabetes under control. Lost some weight in the process.

Baby's energy is surging, thanks to white fat depositing beneath his skin. And since he's growing so fast (weight will triple by birth), things are getting kind of cramped in the womb. What all this means for you: Get ready for some more kicks and jabs to the ribs.

High Risk Pregnancy

I have officially been diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes and am therefore classified as a high risk pregnancy. My pregnancy has been sooo easy up until this point, it just had to be too good to be true. To say I'm upset is an understatement...after a few tears I'm ready to tackle the issue and deal with it head on. I was informed I must see a Nutritionist within 24 hours, however they couldn't fit me in after work and so I'll wait until Tuesday to see the center. Here is a bit of info on what I have.

Diabetes is a condition where sufficient amounts of insulin are either not produced or the body is unable to use the insulin that is produced. Insulin is the hormone that allows glucose to enter the cells of the body to provide fuel. When glucose cannot enter the cells, it builds up in the blood and the body's cells literally starve to death.

Diabetes in pregnancy can have serious consequences for the mother and the growing fetus. The severity of problems often depends on the degree of the mother's diabetic disease, especially if she has vascular (blood vessel) complications and poor blood glucose control. Diabetes that occurs in pregnancy is described as:

Gestational diabetes - when a mother who does not have diabetes develops a resistance to insulin because of the hormones of pregnancy. Women with gestational diabetes may be non-insulin dependent or insulin dependent.
Pre-existing diabetes - women who already have diabetes and become pregnant.
What is gestational diabetes?
Gestational diabetes is a condition in which the glucose level is elevated and other diabetic symptoms appear during pregnancy in a woman who has not previously been diagnosed with diabetes. In most cases, all diabetic symptoms disappear following delivery. However, women with gestational diabetes have an increased risk of developing diabetes later in life, especially if they were overweight before the pregnancy.

Unlike other types of diabetes, gestational diabetes is not caused by a lack of insulin, but by blocking effects of other hormones on the insulin that is produced, a condition referred to as insulin resistance.
What causes gestational diabetes?
Although the cause of gestational diabetes is not known, there are some theories as to why the condition occurs.

The placenta supplies a growing fetus with nutrients and water, as well as produces a variety of hormones to maintain the pregnancy. Some of these hormones (estrogen, cortisol, and human placental lactogen) can have a blocking effect on insulin, which usually begins about 20 to 24 weeks into the pregnancy.

As the placenta grows, more of these hormones are produced, and insulin resistance becomes greater. Normally, the pancreas is able to make additional insulin to overcome insulin resistance, but when the production of insulin is not enough to overcome the effect of the placental hormones, gestational diabetes results.

Treatment for gestational diabetes focuses on keeping blood glucose levels in the normal range. Treatment may include:

special diet
exercise
daily blood glucose monitoring
insulin injections

Possible complications for the baby:
Infants of mothers with gestational diabetes are vulnerable to several chemical imbalances, such as low serum calcium and low serum magnesium levels, but, in general, the major problems of gestational diabetes include:

Macrosomia - refers to a baby that is considerably larger than normal. All of the nutrients the fetus receives come directly from the mother's blood. If the maternal blood has too much glucose, the pancreas of the fetus senses the high glucose levels and produces more insulin in an attempt to use this glucose. The fetus converts the extra glucose to fat. Even when the mother has gestational diabetes, the fetus is able to produce all the insulin it needs. The combination of high blood glucose levels from the mother and high insulin levels in the fetus results in large deposits of fat which causes the fetus to grow excessively large.

Birth injury - may occur due to the baby's large size and difficulty being born.

Hypoglycemia - refers to low blood sugar in the baby immediately after delivery. This problem occurs if the mother's blood sugar levels have been consistently high, causing the fetus to have a high level of insulin in its circulation. After delivery, the baby continues to have a high insulin level, but it no longer has the high level of sugar from its mother, resulting in the newborn's blood sugar level becoming very low. The baby's blood sugar level is checked after birth, and if the level is too low, it may be necessary to give the baby glucose intravenously.

Respiratory distress (difficulty breathing) - too much insulin or too much glucose in a baby's system may delay lung maturation and cause respiratory difficulties in babies. This is more likely if they are born before 37 weeks of pregnancy.

3 Hour Glucose Test

Well...yesterday I completed the three hour glucose test which was not fun. It meant being at the doctors office for a good four hours and getting my blood taken four times while drinking a coke like drink that was way too sweet. Luckily my husband was sweet enough to sit with me through it all but by the end of it I wasn't feeling too great. By the time I got back to the office I was shaking and dizzy, and despite finally being able to eat I still felt weak. I'm glad it's over, today I'll be getting the results. To say I'm nervous is an understatement. I blew through the first test with high results despite having not eaten for twelve hours before. I really don't want to be one of the 2-5% of pregnant women who gets diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Whatever the outcome, I'll deal with it. I'll keep you posted once I get the results.

28 Week Belly Picture

How far along? 28 weeks 2days
Total weight gain/loss: total 26 pounds
Body Changes? Just my belly getting bigger
Sleep: Steve finally slept in this weekend which was great. It was soooo nice to be home for a weekend!
Best moment this week: Seeing all our friends for Sergio's annual remembrance dinner on 9/11. It's amazing how much love there was in that room. We had a great time, and it just shows how much people love Sergio.
Gender: Boy
Food Cravings: I'm craving my Starbucks hot chocolates that I can't have anymore. Now that I'm on a strict diet and can only eat healthy.
What I miss: My old body. Moving around is getting tougher and tougher and I just miss not feeling like a giant peach.
Symptoms: backaches, exhaustion
What I am looking forward to: The weekend so I can relax again and don't have to sit behind a desk all day long.
Milestones: I'll let u know if I have a milestone after my three hour glucose test this week.

A big fat FAIL...

Just got the dreaded phone call, I failed the one hour glucose test, cutoff is 140, my results were 184...great! Oh, and yes, i'm anemic too. Really not what I wanted to hear and I'm a bit upset/worried, but I need to go in for the three hour exam next week and so hopefully I'll pass that one...i hope.

Glucose Test

Our doctors visit went well, Maxi's fundal height was measuring on target at 28 weeks. Essentially, measuring the fundal height involves the woman lying down (it is not meant to be done with the woman in a standing or sitting position) and her caregiver placing the end of the measuring tape on her pubic bone. The symphysis pubis bone is situated just below the pubic hair line in the middle. The length of tape is then positioned up the middle of the woman's belly with the measurement taken from where the tape reaches the top of her uterus or fundus, giving a fundal height in centimetres (cms). Fundal heights tend to be used from about 16 to 37 weeks of pregnancy, with their greatest benefit believed to be between 22 to 34 weeks.
His heartbeat was measuring strong and she said everything looked great. Sadly I didn't get to see him, but just knowing he is growing on target is great! Our next ultrasound will be at 35 weeks. I had my glucose test, which wasn't so bad since the drink they gave me was cold. I'll get the result tomorrow...just praying I don't fail because I really don't want to go back and take the three hour exam. I also got my second rhogam shot which is hurting this time around. I'll keep you informed regarding the results tomorrow, wish me luck!

Week 27

What can I say...RoLo '09 was a total success. I'm sure you're wondering what RoLo even is...well, it's our annual trip filled with romance and love, just the two of us...RoLo-Solo! Sadly I caught the flu last week and was in bed for a few days so i wasn't fully recovered by the time our trip rolled around, but i was on the mend. We got there Friday and spent three days getting massages, facials, kayaking, reading, site seeing, eating at great places and just enjoying each other. It was way more expensive then I had wished for, however it was our last weekend together before our lives will be forever changed with the arrival of our son. The last weekend we could fully enjoy ourselves without having to worry about babysitters and children and all the other good stuff. And it was Soooo worth it. We made a promise to go on a annual RoLo trip together, no kids, dogs or distractions...just husband and wife enjoying some "us" time.
Monday we got back and had our friends wedding in Queens. It was a wonderful celebration and the bride looked amazing. I even managed to make it on the dance floor for a good portion of the night, and of course my lovely husband was all over the dance floor just enjoying himself.
Max's kicks have been getting stronger and stronger, especially when i lay on my side. We have our doctors appointment on Thursday where they will test me for gestational diabetes. I'm just super excited to see him, its felt like ages since our last ultrasound. I'll also be getting my second rhogam shot in the butt...can't wait!
On the home front, Steve and i found a parcel of land we love and my father approves of. We would like to put a bid on it, however we just found out today that the price it was listed for was wrong and it's a bit above what we can afford. I'm totally bummed, it was perfect for us, but what can you do. Hopefully it will work out, but it's not looking good.
Last but not least, my lovely hubby will be leaving me right before we close on our apartment to head to London for an internship my father was nice enough to get him. He is super excited and we are hoping something will come of it...even if it's just networking and him learning a lot. Whatever the case, it will be a great experience and he just better make it home on time to help me pack up the apartment :)

27 Week Belly Pictures

How far along? 27 weeks 1 Day
Total weight gain/loss: total 26 pounds
Body Changes? Husband says I haven't changed much this week...so there ya go!
Sleep: Got a lot of it on our trip, although Steve can't seem to sleep in these days. Sunday morning Max woke me up with some hard kicks to my belly...it was a lovely way to wake up...NOT.
Best moment this week: Taking our trip to Lake Waramaug....it was sooo nice and relaxing.
Gender: Team Blue
Food Cravings: junk food...total aversion to meat.
What I miss: Being able to jog and really workout.
Symptoms: had the flu which was enough.
What I am looking forward to: Seeing Max on Thursday.
Milestones: finding a piece of land we would like to bid on.

Baby's lungs are going through some major developments these days, which (combined with the opening of previously plugged nostrils) means he's now able to practice inhaling and exhaling. The lack of air in your womb means every "breath" is filled with amniotic fluid, but hey -- it's progress.
